What and Why:

Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. After you install Dropbox on your computer, any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, your iPhone and iPad and even the Dropbox website! With the Dropbox app, you can take everything that matters to you on the go.
(Description from iTunes.)

  1. You are creating a printed tutorial and want to have some screenshots of the iPad screens. On the iPad, take some screenshots of at least 5 different applications. Hold the Power button and press the Home button for a second. The screen will go black for a second. The photo is placed in your camera roll or your PhotoStream. From Dropbox on the iPad, click Upload and the + symbol. Navigate to your photos and select the photos (or movies) you wan to upload. Note movies can take a lot of room and a movie over 3 minutes in length is probably too large to upload using Dropbox. Try PhotoSync ($) if you need to wirelessly sync larger files or use iCloud.
  2. Load a .pdf or .doc or .ppt file from your computer into your Dropbox folder. Open Dropbox on the iPad and see if you can access your file. While Dropbox provides a preview of the file, if you want to edit the file or have additional viewing options, you need to have an application on the iPad which support that file type.
  3. Add a file to your public folder in Dropbox on your computer and link to this file (or shorten the URL with a site like http://bit.ly) Try going to http://bit.ly/mann1 in a browser on your iPad to view a .pdf This .pdf can be opened in iBooks or some other application which can open .pdfs and has a hook within your browser.
